Math & Chemistry Sessions Provide
Support Before Finals
There are two ExSEL Math study sessions every week. It is a great opportunity to review material, work through problems and get some help from Learning Center Coaches, ExSEL mentors and classmates.  If you haven’t taken advantage of this great opportunity, it isn’t too late.  Finals are right around the corner!  The math study sessions cover MA1030, MA1032, and MA1160 and are held every Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Fisher Hall, room 126 and every Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at Fisher Hall, room 129.

The Chemistry Learning Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Chemical Sciences Building in Room 208. As you walk through the door into the Chemistry Learning Center, there will be chemistry coaches to assist you or you can sit down at one of the tables to study. If you have questions as you are studying, please let one of the chemistry coaches know and they will be happy to assist you.  For a listing of hours go to:

These are open, walk-in sessions. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Liebau at

To Cram or Not to Cram...
There May Be No Question!

It is never a good idea to learn a lot of material in a short time period, but sometimes that is the predicament you've put yourself in. Giving up not being an option, there are some techniques to follow when trying to learn a large amount of material in an impractical amount of time.

When your time is limited, whether to a night or a few days, you have to choose what to study. Focus on the main ideas and formulas that you believe will get you the most points on the exam. To maximize your available time read chapter summaries or skim text to narrow down key concepts. Study from past tests, quizzes, homework and review information. If your own notes are incomplete (for whatever reason) try to study with someone who has a better version or ask if you may copy theirs.

Study in a quiet area, but make sure it isn't too comfortable because comfort encourages sleep. Take short breaks every hour. A stretch, shower, or short walk can help you re-energize. Try to sleep in 3 hour increments; they are the sleep cycles proven to be most beneficial. Sleep will aid in concentration when you are actually taking your exam. Remember to set your alarm and ask a roommate or friend to make sure you wake up. Most importantly, next time manage your time effectively to keep yourself out of the situation of having to cram for any exam.

Mentors Available for
Spring Semester

A new semester means a fresh start. Whether you struggled last term or just want to get a jump on spring semester--a Peer Mentor can help. Even if you didn't sign up during fall, the opportunity to be assigned a Peer Mentor is still available for spring semester. Peer Mentors provide support in many ways including helping with time management, study skills, organization and tutoring. If you are interested in being assigned a mentor, please contact Tori at tconnors@mtu.edu
